After ignoring the taqueria inside the convenience store at the Chevron gas station on the south end of Cloverdale for years, last month I decided to try Aztec Grill. There's a single cashier for convenience store purchases and ordering/picking up food. The menu board's largely devoted to burritos though tacos, quesadillas, tostadas, tortas, and platters are available as well. If you wish to eat in, there are a handful of tables inside.
While not a burrito devotee, for some reason, I gravitated toward the chile relleno burrito this evening. Ordered with the whole bean option as a super with guacamole and sour cream, the whole shebang was wrapped in a nicely griddled and chewy flour tortilla. Unfortunately, the chile relleno entombed within was cold in the middle. The kitchen apologized and soon made up a whole new one with a suitably molten cheese core. While not freshly fried, the chile had some kick to it, and the rice and bean components were quite good. Rather than guacamole, a few slices of ripe and buttery avocado were slipped inside.
Not revelatory, but decent. The complimentary chips and salsa were quite good and even better. Most of the other customers, a mix of Latino families and non-Latino males, seemed to be regulars, well-known to the cashier. Since prices are higher than the other taqueria options in town, something else is drawing them in. Maybe this merits more investigation.
