Aziza-dinner and entertainment

peter | Aug 25, 200304:16 PM

We went with friends to Aziza last night. We originally tried to go to Avance in San Rafael for the music and dancers, my friends wife practices Flamenco and they have friends in Spain who perform professionally. Since their wasn't any entertainment plannned that night at Avance, we went to Aziza instead to eat Moroccan and watch the bellydancers.

We sat in a dining room that had wrought iron lamps, very comfortable chairs and a padded banquet with lots of pillows.

The server was excellent, the food was very tasty, we had a watermelon salad to start, with small olives, yellow and red watermelon, feta cheese all drizzled lightly with honey.

We ordered a bottle of Syrah to go with the appetizers: Baked cod in Phyllo dough (the best of the three); Pita Bread with three dips, eggplant, yogurt and the third escapes me; Bastillo, chicken, cinnamon, paprika and nuts wrapped in phyllo dough, baked and sprinkled with powdered sugar, very good.

We had a bootle of Pinot Noir (Ponzi), I asked the server between the Pinot and a Cab Franc (which cost more) and she suggested the Pinot because it would go with the entrees better. The entrees were a Lamb Shank with coucous, which fell of the bone and melted in the mouth. The other entree was Aziza couscous, which was a center of couscous with grilled prawns, chicken and lamb sausage surrounding it.

We were there two and a half hours, eating and talking, we never felt rushed nor negelected. They had a lot of food runners, they worked three rooms, so we were always seeing new people bringing and explaining our food.

Only one dancer who performed briefly, she danced enthusiastically but I thought they would have more performances during the evening.
