Avocado - St. Albert

Last night we ventured out on the really icy roads to try somewhere new. Hubby picked Avocado's.

We arrived about 8'ish and the place was very busy. We were seated almost right away and it only took a minute for the waitress to pop by and take our drink orders.

The menu is what I would consider small. Nice change to not see ground beef dishes. They have their standard menu, and a sheet of specials that includes two nice sounding burgers.

We ordered the chips and salsa - medium salsa and an extra corn salsa as well. These were very good, the medium salsa was pretty standard fresh made salsa. The corn salsa was really good, nice and fresh tasting, could have used a bit more tomato, but had decent spice. The disappointment was the chips, would have preferred homemade but they appear to be from a bag (perhaps Doritos??).

The waitress informed us they were out of a few things: Calamari, Sweet Potato Fries, and BEEF???? Not sure how you run out of beef.

So that changed our orders. I had the grilled chicken burrito and hubby had the pulled pork burrito. I had fries as a side and he had the mixed greens with their house special avocado dressing. Fries are fries, his salad looked great. Lots of different greens, a few cherry tomatoes and he said the dressing was really good.

The portions are on the smaller side, however, I only finished half my burrito (so hubby took one for the team and finished mine too!). The chicken was nice, lots of guacamole, a hint of sour cream, chunks of chicken, little bit of tomato, nicely pressed on the grill. Hubby enjoyed his pulled pork, it looked nicely prepared inside. Certainly not full of rice and refried beans like other places. Wasn't overloaded with cheese either, which was nice.

We used a coupon from the Entertainment book ($14 off) so dinner came to just over $32 before tip. $46 without the coupon might have been a little expensive for what we had, but service was great, the atmosphere is nice, the restaurant in nicely decorated.

I mentioned to the waitress it seemed rather busy (the kitchen was really busy with plates going out every minute or so). She said they had been closed several days this past week due to their food order not coming in, makes me wonder what caused that (financial? weather related?).

Overall we enjoyed ourselves, would definitely go back again. Other than the fresh made corn salsa not sure how authentic this place is, but the food and service were good.
