First Szechwan Wok has been in Westwood Village since the 1980s serving highly Americanized Chinese food. I popped in for the first time since 1988 and the menu seemed unchanged, starting with egg rolls and General Tso's chicken, then going downhill to "healthy" favorites for Westsiders. But then I looked up at the blackboard and saw a listing of authentic dishes. Fish in hot oil. Spicy beef with potatoes. Chicken with dry chili. Watercress. Apparently First Szechwan Wok is following the lead I mentioned in my article on Chinese food in college towns such as Eugene, OR, where longtime purveyors of Americanized Chinese food are now also dishing out items for the new wave of Chinese college students from the interior of China. Of course, that still leaves the question of whether a restaurant serving mediocre Americanized Chinese food can do a good job of authentic dishes. I'll let somebody else be the guinea pig here.
