Hubby and I wanted to participate in the voting but were surprised that we had not been to or heard of some of the places listed or hadn't actually had their food in many, many years. We thought it only fair to go try these places out before we vote, We hit 3 of them today (the campus area) - Freedmen's, Ruby's, and Black's.

We were very pleasantly surprised by the brisket at Freedman's. Even the lean was nice and moist, a good, smokey flavor throughout and a delicious peppery crust. We can't say the same about Ruby's. That brisket had no flavor. It seemed more like corned beef or lunch meat. Bleh. My hubby did like their creamy slaw though. Black's was good all around. We'd had their bbq in Lockhart a while ago. Briskets had some smoke, the beef ribs were very good and meaty, and the corn casserole was tasty. We're stuffed and have plenty of leftovers for dinner, but hope to hit Micklethwait and Kerlin on the East side tomorrow before round 1 voting closes. Ahhh, the things we must do....

Black's BBQ,
Terry Black's Barbecue,
Micklethwait Craft Meats,
Kerlin BBQ
