On Day 17 of the 30 day ethnic food challenge it turned out to be a very G’Day. It would however have to be a take-away. In South Boston behind the door with the boxing Koala is KO Catering and Pies. KO is all about Australian Inspired fare including traditional savory meat and vegetarian pies as well as sandwiches, barbequed grilled seafood and salads. This Australian embassy is the down-under brain child of Chef Sam Jackson. Sam says of the name KO, “It stands for 'Ken Oath' which is Aussie slang for reaffirming your admiration for something, including how much you may have liked your meal”. He’s betting your meal will be a knock out as well.
Lot’s to choose from but meat pies, pastys, shrimp on the Barbie, dessert and drinks will have to do. Today I only have time to pick up lunch and run. The flaky crust savory pies include classic beef and beef stew. The piquantly pleasant pies are hand rolled and kept warm waiting for you. The Pantry shelves stock Australian grocery favorites, such as HP Sauce (malt vinegar/tamarind), Vegemite (yeast extract spread), Tim Tams chocolate biscuits and Sweet Chili Sauce. Sam suggests just ketchup with the pies but on this outing we’re going for pure pie. Plastic cutlery make quick work of the pies and the Pastys which are meat filled pastry cases that are flavorful and filling. Pair this with sensational Fentimans’ botanically brewed ginger beer. Be sure to invert the bottle before pouring to get the full effect. The spicy ginger brew grows on you and contrasts well with the satisfying pies.
Couldn’t miss Shrimp on the Barbie. Red spiced, grilled just right and served on a bed of salad with feta and lots of fresh limes the plate is perky and refreshing. There’s lots more to come back for at KO like the Chicken Schnitzel Burger, the Grilled Fish Sandwich and Brekky (breakfast/available weekends).
To close out the Australian interlude the Lamingtons are a must. A Lamington is a cube of sponge cake, coated in a layer of chocolate then shredded coconut. In Australia you find them in places like cafes, lunch bars, better supermarkets and KO Catering and pies. Minties which are mint salt water taffy had to come home too. Chef Sam and his crew are tremendous hosts and KO is a place you want to come back to and try more things Australian which turn out to be very much on top.
