Au gratin potatoes again - what cheese?

What kind of cheese do you use in your au gratins? I've learned how tricky cheddar is in cooking, but I love its flavor. Planning a layered au gratin without pre-cooking spuds. Recipe calls for gruyere. I'm a big believer in cheesy flavor overall. Suggestions?
