Attention billh: Here Are Your Sloppy Joes

For all you midwesterners who have a hankering for sloppy joes (and especially for billh, who asked for the recipe), this is from Wisconsin, circa 1950.

*Sloppy Joes*

2 lbs lean ground beef
1 cup thinly sliced celery
1 cup diced yellow or white onion
1 or 2 large cloves garlic, minced
1 diced green pepper
2 tsp worcestershire sauce
4 tsp white vinegar
4 tsp dark brown sugar
2 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp paprika
1 cup catsup
2 cups water

Brown meat. Sauté vegetables in the same pan until soft. Drain fat, if necessary. Add all other ingredients and simmer for an hour or more. Serve on a crusty roll, with potato chips and a good pickle on the side.

Serves 4 or 5.

*2001 update: I like to tweak this recipe by adding one or two minced chiles serrano and a minced chile chipotle en adobo or two.
