Athens Report

Five and Ten- thank you Chowhounds- had an outstanding meal here a few wks ago. I won't go into all the details on what we ate- there are quite a few reviews available already
but I do want to comment on the superb service -unusually good.
The restaurant appears quite casual and unpretentious, which surprised me because it's received so much acclaim. The first course was delivered to the table by the chef owner.
What the waiter did not do:
He did not chirp "My name is so and so and I will be your waiter tonight."
He did not kneel next to the table. He did not interrupt our conversation with a constant, anxious inquiry of "How is everything?"
What he did do: he was knowledgeable, friendly and dignified. He seemed to anticipate our needs and magically appeared the instant we needed him. In short, my idea of the perfect waiter.
I wish the Five and Ten would open a branch in our hometown-everything from bread to dessert was fantastic and reasonably priced too.

Big City Bread- we just missed the 10:30 am cutoff for breakfast. Breads, pastries, sandwiches, coffee were excellent. The quiche crust was more of a puff pastry type and was ruined when they heated it in a microwave-became tough and inedible. The bakery/cafe has a wonderful, large outdoor patio with tables. It's easy to drive right by since the patio and entrance are obscured by pretty trees and plantings. This is a real gem and we'll return next time we're in Athens.

East West Bistro- had a disappointing blackened salmon sandwich here. It did not taste fresh and the bread quality was mediocre. We sat next to the window/sill which needed a good, deep scrubbing. Next time, we'll try the Last Resort.

Siri Thai- I don't want to slam this place because if you live in Athens and are desperate for Asian food you might need to eat here occasionally. We experienced some very odd flavors ithat you don't normally associate with food: water glasses tasted of disinfectant, broccoli tasted like sterno/mothballs, tofu had a barnyard flavor. The shrimp was very fresh and the sticky rice w/ mango was excellent. Decor was attractive and service was pleasant.
