Taking a break between quilt museum and textile museum with the wife, we tried an unassuming Greek restaurant at the corner of Market and Dutton in downtown Lowell. The menu looks like every other Greek place but the food tastes like there is Greek yaya cooking out back. We read in the menu that Stavros and Alexandra opened the place in 1974 and it is still family run and operated. We ordered the gyros sandwich to share($7.95) and a avgolemono soup ($2.95). The sandwich came with a greek salad and a lentil soup that was better than the one at Reef Cafe which I think is excellent! The lentil soup had a hint of cinnamon, an unusual touch that made it sing. The avgolemono soup was fresh and clean; just essence of chicken, lemon, and egg. The gyros was the best I've had outside Greece. It was gigantic, easily a pound of pressed lamb that was further grilled on charcoal served on a 10" pita (also grilled)with homemade tzatziki. Pure heaven! This was a big time score made sweeter as it was picked almost at random. I have volunteered to attend the next quilt show just to be able to try more of Stavros' excellent fare.
