The new Athans in Brighton Center has a beautiful 60 seat cafe serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in addition to their wonderful pastries. We had a FABULOUS dinner there, and the prices were half what they would be for comparable food in the South End or one of the other destination neighborhoods.
We started with a perfect caesar salad and a blue waldorf salad with shredded lettuce, goronzola, apples, and golden raisins, with a very subtle yogurt dressing. Entrees were the high point - best was a portabella napoleon with layers of wilted spinich, roasted peppers and gorgonzola between three giant roasted portabellas, finished with a mavrodaphne wine reduction. Our other entree was a braised lamb shank served with eggplant puree, sauteed bitter greens and handmade potato crisps. These entrees were absolutely delicious, and priced at $9.95 and 12.95. Insane.
The room is beautiful, the service was informal but very competent and personable, tasteful music, you get the picture. No wine and beer yet, but they're working on it.
