I ate at Joe's this past weekend...

This is the new Joe's (subtitled Excllent Chinese Cuisine) on Ocean Avenue, which took over the space that Five-Star Chinese used to be.

It was a cold and rainy early Saturday evening, and the place was doing a very brisk takeout/delivery business (maybe because of the weather).

We had a squid & veggie dish, a basil Chicken dish, and a Chinese Spinach dish.

The good:
The Basil Chicken dish was good, very fresh and flavorful, though quite heavy on the chopped purple onion.

The Chinese Spinach (ong choy) dish we ordered came in the shrimp paste rendition, though the stinky bean curd rendition was also available. It was yummy, though quite heavy on the garlic. I would have preferred to have had the stinky bean curd rendition, but I was with the non-Asian Beau, so I am sure he would have not touched it with a ten-foot pole if I had ordered it that way.

The bad:
In the squid and veggie dish, the squid was cooked to perfection so that it was not tough at all. The dish came with a huge selection of veggies (baby corn, cabbage, black fungus, carrot, etc. etc.). But the one thing very odd about the dish was that it had an overall powdery texture too the cornstarch slurry was not mixed up/cooked through the dish enough... So in that sense, it was very sad and disappointing, as I love squid and was very much looking forward to this particular dish.

Also good was the fact that BROWN rice was offered (for a slight upcharge). It also seemed to me that the restaurant tries to be a little more environmentally conscious than your average neighborhood Chinese restaurant.

They also offer a substantial vegetarian menu, which went beyond the usual veggie-heavy offerings on the normal menu. They offer dishes such as "walnut with peaking sauce," "Vegetarian Mu Shu", "Kung Pao Tofu," substantial Mushroom dishes, and substantial nut dishes, etc.

I'd go there again, despite the squid dish powdery texture mishap.

P.S. Another Chinese place that has brown rice (but which I haven't tried) is Feng Shui @ 2346 Lombard. It has Hunan and Mandarin Chinese Cuisine.
