went shopping the weekend before last to stock up on meals for a coupla guys on an upcoming week long hunt (i'm the designated cook). stopped by "astoria meat products" at 35-09 broadway for the first time. my mother has been going there for years and i'm kinda surprised at myself that i haven't been there before. the place is an old world type eastern european butcher shop specializing in pork products and the stuff is outrageously good. i bought the kielbasa, smoked pork loin, various sausages (don't know the names...i just pointed at what looked tasty),
fresh ham, franks and a coupla pounds of saurkraut. all of it was great and i got a lot of compliments from the hunting pack (a real bunch of gavonnes). it's a treat to just walk in the place as there are plenty of goodies displayed around the counters and from snooping around it appears that most of the stuff is prepared and smoked in-house. the prices were gentle, the quality was great and i'm dying to go there again and try some more of their stuff. if you're into this kinda fare (it's a vegan's nightmare) give it a shot and let me know what you think!
