Aspic: extraordinary quality/price

mangeur | Nov 8, 201610:20 AM     4

In his tiny 9e restaurant, Quentin Giroud is turning out brilliantly conceived and perfectly executed plates that belie the 43€ tab for his 7 course "surprise" menu. Seasonal and generous, artistic and delicious. This was our second visit, our having dined there previously this spring. Both meals were stellar.

Every course was excellent but stand outs were a stunning pumpkin soup with almonds. Crisp, tender sauteed carrolet with silky spinach. Rosy duck breast with beet puree that caused my husband to quip, "If you'd just cook beets THIS way....". And without doubt the best chocolate tart I have ever had.

Our two meals at Aspic were orders of magnitude better than two starred dinners we had this year, and were less than half the price of either. Not an iota of pretension, just passionate cooking and sweet service.

Wines equally reasonably priced, by the glass, bottle or pairing.

Aspic goes on our permanent list. But I have the feeling that this sweet address will not be Giroud's last.
