I want to recommend a delightful cross-Asian cookbook I recently saw at a friend's house in Chicago and purchased cheaply on the net [about $16 WITH shipping].
It's called "The Essential Asian Cookbook". It was originally published in Australia and has a nice sampling of recipies for each of the countries. It doesn't avoid authentic ingredients [Lasksa leaves, etc.] but so far I've seen nothing that you can't find in the bay area if you look hard enough.. It's filled with color photos and in my opinion is of a MUCH higher quality than the price [at least the one I found] would imply. I couldn't come up with it by Title or publisher-Whitecap Books, but fortunately wrote down the ISBN # [ 1 55110 793 7] and found many sources at a wide variety of prices with that search. I have many [many] country specific cookbooks but immediately find this one of very frequent use.
