Asia Marketplace is a Southeast Asian grocery store that has been open for 4 months. When I spotted the Sai Oua (Lao sausage) in the hot box, I asked the owner if they were from Laos. She answered affirmatively. Then when I inquired further if they were Hmong, Mien, Issan, or . . . she asked me, "Who are you and where are you from?" I explained why I was in Redding and that I wondered how the evacuees in her community were doing. She told me that the Lao people in this area had evacuated to Crosspoint Church, one of the shelters that we've been supplying with hot meals. The family that runs this shop are Iu-Mien from Laos.
Out of the hot box, I chose the kao soy, after confirming that it was Mien style without coconut milk. This shows how it's packaged.
Strictly to-go, there was a table of goods set up in the store, and I was allowed to sit at one corner. Here's what the kao soy looked like once I opened the packets of soup and the seasoned ground pork to combine with the noodles, bean sprouts, scallions, cilantro and shredded cabbage. I added a few drops of the packaged hot sauce. This made for a delicious lunch.
On the table were prepared foods that the store was giving away to evacuees and first responders.
The selection included Pad lao, sticky rice with Lao sausage, rice noodles with egg, fried chicken wings, and other goodies.
Also donated to those in need, grocery bags of non-perishable food. Evacuees were starting to return home and were coming in to buy groceries as the food in their refrigerators had spoiled during the loss of power.
The owner didn't want to take my money when I tried to pay. I insisted, and she rang it up as only $4, which I bet is a big discount but I did not feel like fighting with her. She sent me back to camp with some of the prepared foods, which I distributed to give my fellow volunteers an idea of what Lao food can be.
Please patronize this store when in Redding. The owner was so sweet and hugged me when I left.
