Ashland, Oregon's House of Thai

Say all,

If you're ever in Ashland, Oregon (oh, about two hundred and some-odd miles inland from the coast, and about 20 miles north of the CAL/OR border on I-5), you ought to stop by the House of Thai. It fits the Chowhound specs perfectly.

Situated at the south end of Ashland, it's out of the main stream where all the finer restaurants are. House of Thai has reasonable atmosphere, decent service (though the help isn't much to talk with in that they're very reticent) but the food...oh, goodness, the food...

Try the Tom Kha Gai soup (you fault me because I can't spell it???). It's a chicken broth/coconut milk base soup (but they go very light on the coconut which is half the secret). The rest of the soup is made up of Galanga, Lemon Grass, mushroom, rich chicken broth and chicken pieces, and a host of other wonderful things. It's very, very spicy but only reasonably hot, so you won't loose your buds and never know if it tasted good!

Folks, this isn't just plain run-of-the-mill soup. It's beyond any other Tom Kha Gai Thai soup I've tasted, and I've had several versions of it. You won't be dissapointed!

Along with it, try the Pad Thai - chicken, shrimp or beef. But horde the soup to yourself!
