Asari Ramen @ Okazu Ya SF (Noriega), San Francisco

Melanie Wong | Feb 1, 200508:16 PM

Listed just as "asari ramen" on the menu (along with rib ramen, vegetable ramen, and one other ramen-y choice), the red-tinged saucy bowl heaped to overflowing with sauteed clams was sort of startling when presented. Ten plump and succulent clams in the shell were cooked just so in a moderately hot chili-spiced thickened gravy, then poured over the base of ramen in broth. A small amount of bean sprouts and a sprinkling of scallions on top completed the picture.

The two liquids were a bit too miscible, and it took building a dam to hold back the spicy gravy and creating a well for some of the unmixed soup to come up from the bottom of the bowl for me to trap a few spoonfuls of the unadorned broth. It seemed to be a rich pork-based stock, and I would have liked less gravy or at least the chance to taste more of the stock on its own. Yet, I must admit, the combination was certainly addictive, especially as the heat started to build up in the mouth.

Ordered "firm", the thin, fresh noodles were still softer than I would have liked, but in a reasonable range, and they absorbed the flavors nicely. This dish tasted more Chinese-y to me, lacking the spectrum of extra salty flavor accents that register as Japanese on my palate. But all in all, a very delicious bowl and a bargain at $6.25.

This was my first time to this restaurant. I liked having my own carafe of piping hot tea. My server said that the Okazu Ya on Taraval has the same owner.
