Asahi review

I think it was called Asahi. On Church just south of Bloor. We were there last week and it was the worst Japanese meal I've had. That it was supposed to be a made-to-order buffet only made it worse.

The food was not satisfactory. The fried stuff was a bit oily...and not that satisfying hot fresh greasiness. It was just stale and slick. The sushi was not good at all. I'm no expert, but there is this subtlety to sushi as far as combining ingredients and taste, in addition to presentation. The rolls were just excessively ricy. I mean, if I wanted a tasteless california roll made by some ham-fisted guy, I would have stayed at home and made it myself.

The place was way understaffed. I think there was one cook in the hot kitchen, a man making the sushi, and one waitress. When I asked her for more tea, the response was "Oh, I'm sorry, I don't have time for that." I almost fell off the chair.

We ate our first selection and I walked to the service area and passed off another fool order. Half an hour later and the food doesn't come but we have to go. By this time we've heen there for over an hour and half. We're back at the service area asking for the bill. The sushi guy appologizes and says we have to have some melon before we go and gestures to the waitress to settle the bill. She's there calculating and he's screaming at her in Japanese. In front of us. That was so not cool.

We leave the restaurant hungry and having paid a few dollars more than usual and getting way less food.

Has anyone else had this experience? Is there anything I could have done/could still do? Now that I think about it, the evening there was a big waste and I can't believe it happened.
