My husband and I tried the new Artisan restaurant in Southport. Since it was only the 2nd night, I'd hardly call our experience typical because I'm sure they're still working things out. Let me start by saying the room is lovely - there's a very relaxed bar/patio overlooking a courtyard out back, a tavern area inside, and a lovely more formal restaurant with a private room for 10 within. My husband and I ate in the restaurant. The service was kind but not terribly knowledgable; that's something they'll have to improve upon especially since they market themselves as "farm to table". I had a salad of bibb lettuce with blue cheese, roasted walnuts. My husband started with gravlax with fingerling potatoes and watercress. For our entrees I had light and delicious goat cheese gnocchi with slivers of asparagus and fava beans...the small portion was just right; my husband had grilled sea scallops with hen of the woods, fresh peas and roasted red peppers. Both were yummy - on par with our meals at LeFarm in Westport. We didn't have time for dessert (new babysitter). The crowd was swanky and so were the prices. We'll go back with friends once it's had time to find it's groove. Wine ordered by the glass came halfway through dinner; coffee after our meal was tepid. Those were really our only quibbles.
