Had an out and out awful meal at Arharn Thai tonight (36th Ave. in Astoria near the N/W). Only the second time I've been (first was more positive), but I'm pretty certain it will be the last. Didn't feel like an off night somehow. Squid salad featured clearly frozen squid (do you know that horrible spiky presentation of squid, like someone cut it into a flower - that's a dead frozen given away) and cost $8.25. It was borderline foul. Then had Shrimp w/ chili and onions and watercress with black bean sauce. The shrimp was at least mediocre, but the watercress sauce tasted funky - old...I dunno what - really don't even want to think about it. Had bananas in coconut milk afterwards, a dessert I once raved about here. It was too salty, too sweet, entirely un-subtle.
I'm not sure if this is a downhill alert, or maybe I was just too forgiving on my first visit (About a year ago I think). But the place had all the markings of a bad restaurant (except for very friendly and courteous service).
With all the good Thai in Astoria (Thai Angel - despite its ever increasing devolution towards complete kitsch in the decor; Yajai Thai; even Thai Pavillion) there's no need to put up with food that was this sub-par. (Did I mention that everything was overpriced?)
Anyway, just thought I'd rant a bit.
