Argonaut Hotel at Jefferson at Hyde... Culinary wasteland?

Hello, chowhounds.

I'm a bit worried. I'm staying in SF for only 4 nights... 2 nights right near Union Sq/SoMa and 2 nights at the Argonaut which is at the corner of Jefferson at Hyde. I've been to the city a few times, and would not have chosen to stay near the wharf, if it was not for my curiousity about the new Kimpton hotel.

So to the real question... will 2 nights in that area be culinary suicide? I keep looking for restaurants in the area -- I keep seeing mixed reviews on Ana Mandara and I think Gary Danko may not be in the cards this trip. Is there anywhere good to eat in walking distance that is actually good? I don't need a view and a lot of tourists to make me happy, but I do need damn fine chow!

Is it walking distance to any good restaurants on Columbus Ave., and if so where would you dine?

I do have an option to cut my stay there short by one night and book another night near SoMa. Suggestions?
