here's some info i heard today during a quick guinness break at THE HOG PIT between doing the laundry. the only other folks in there were the bartender and the owner of a new meatpacking district restaurant next door. fyi--this is all in the iconic triangle building block on 9th avenue and hudson at 14th street.
first, the new restaurant is called ARA and is fairly well along. the owner is a bit worried about opening on time before he loses his liquor license(?)
second, THE HOG PIT has a lease for five more years, then they will close as the building owner jacks the rent and gentrifies them out. for sure. ps--the ARA owner was eating a bowl of chili that looked and smelled awful.
third, and more interesting, is that both of these people were talking with me about mayor bloomberg behind a push to move up bar closing hours to 2:30am! no clubs no exceptions. the reasoning is that it would reduce the amount of police needed at nighttime. anyone hear about this one? bar folks?
