aquitaine on valentine's day

I'd like to write a descriptive review but unfortunately will have to be brief; maybe can write more later.

Overall, a very positive experience. Service was excellent. Our waiter was accomodating and knowledgable without being intrusive. We had a 7pm reservation and he allowed us to take our time; I thought for sure they might try and rush us out but we were there till after 9.

We started with a field greens salad (endive, watercress, etc) and the classic mussels. The salad was ok, slightly underdressed, but fine. But the mussels. Wow, the mussels...they really are amazing. I can sort of take or leave mussels - but these...I'd come back for these anyday. A rich creamy sauce with intense flavors - described on the menu as 'mussels with sancerre, shallots and fresh thyme' Really a spectacular combination of flavors that makes for one of the more memorable dishes I've had in Boston.
I had a glass of the Alcasian Pinot Grigio with this; very nice.

For entrees, I had my heart set on steak frites - - but then there was a special of the evening. Aquitaine's version of surf and turf -- Filet mignon w/bernaise with a chunk of lobster tail on top....all served on a bed of chunky/mashed potatoes. A side of asparagas too. Absolutely delicious. I ordered the the filet mignon Medium, and it was really closer to Medium Rare, which was actually closer to the way I wanted it anyway. Really a nice cut of meat. My partner had the chateaubriand of pork, served with a intense cherry sauce - - this must be a new addition as I do not see it on the online menu. Really tender, juicy pork, cooked perfectly.

Both great dishes. We did have one issue -- when they both came to the table, they were barely lukewarm. I'm not sure how this happened as we actually waited about 15-20 minutes between app and entree, so it's not like they were sitting around waiting for us to finish up. We sent them back to the kitchen and they were promptly returned to the table and all was good.

For dessert - a special of bananas foster. Delicious, although honestly I'm not sure how you can screw up bananas, brown sugar, vanilla ice cream. But it was a nice end to the meal...(even if it was $12, saw this when the check came, classic example of marking up 'specials' which always bugs me)...but anyway.

Total - $117 for 2 apps, 2 entrees, 3 glasses of wine, a tea, and dessert. Not bad, certainly better than I might have guessed.

All in all, a very positive experience. The place was rocking on Valentine's Day but for the most part it seemed like all was humming and going smoothly.
