I just had a wonderful second meal at Aqui in San Jose last night. It's sort of an upscale Mexican restaurant in terms of ingredients and decor. However, it's low in terms of price - entrees are all $4.50 - $11 with most in the $7 range. I had a crab cake for $5.50 off the small plates menu that was too big for me to finish (and I think the cheapest crab cake I've ever eaten, not to mention that it was an extremely competent rendition, served on a bed of slaw with a chipotle cream sauce).
I also shared a basket of great chips with perfect refillable salsa fresca/pico de gallo ($1.50). Also refillable? their daily aqua fresca ($1.60) which was wonderfully canteloupe-y on our visit. The boyfriend was extremely happy with his humongous $8.99 "knife and fork" salmon burrito. I only regret that I was too full to try one of the $4.25 desserts. The cherry bread pudding looked amazing.
It's an order-at-the-counter, find-a-table kind of place. It's a little loud, and looks super-kid friendly; I saw a lot of tables with babies.
