In celebration of "Herring Week" (I know, pretty goofy, right?), Aquavit's casual cafe has been doing a $35 all-you-can-eat buffet this week. Never having been to the restaurant, we went tonight, thinking this would be a good (and reasonably priced) introduction.
They had six different deliciously prepared types of herring (I think my favorite was the curry style), smoked salmon, a very tasty anchovy & egg combination, swedish meatballs with a delicious cranberry sauce, chicken with a great curry sauce, a very tasty "home fry"-like potato dish, and various other tasty condiments and side dishes. Although Swedish food is probably not one of the great cuisines of the world, this happened to be very creatively and artfully prepared, and a real deal with an umlimited amount for $35.
The meal also included one dessert, and I chose an absolutely unique and delicious "goat cheese & passion fruit sorbet "parfait" that was, in fact, the equal of any "dessert cuisine" from anywhere in the world.
Also, the service was extremely professional and efficient, even in the lower-priced cafe where we ate.
I don't think I'd ever spend the normal $100 per person there in the regular restaurant, but tonight's experience was definitely impressive and a lot of fun.
