Keep meaning to mention, I enjoyed a well-prepared and nicely served $20.01 lunch at Aquavit's Cafe during the recent Restaurant Week. (Tho', for a bustling, busy spot, it's so discreetly located--down a flight of steps and with a nameplate so obscure that it barely whispers its name--that we walked past it twice! It's at 54th St between 5th and 6th Ave, north side of street.)
The $20.01 special is an everyday occurrence at Aquavit, so you can try it anytime. Also, I believe that at dinner there is a $30.01 special.
My choices from the short but tempting menu: an excellent tangy cauliflower soup with lime; salmon (cooked rare-to-medium on the outside and almost tartare in the center) rolled in what tasted like thin crisy potato wrappers; and for dessert--a course I was so glad that I didn't skip this time--the most amazing plate of what I think was an iced goat's milk cheese topped with cloudberry sorbet and a crunchy, cone-like biscuit. Through the center of the frozen goat's milk cheese was a tart lemon filling--giving the whole thing a vertical poached egg look. It beats any dessert in my memory.
And, don't miss the many varieties of aquavit--I heartily recommend a glass of the toasted carraway.
