April 22-23, 2011 Inaugural BBQ Capital Cook-off in Lexington

Friday we headed to Lexington to check out the first day of the Inaugural BBQ Capital Cook-off. In the wind, rain and cold, most of the people on the grounds (free admission) were associated with the competing teams. This is a big contest with 52 teams and in the early evening the competitors were busy setting up their pits and starting their fires for overnight cooking.

The most interesting part for me coming out here from California was seeing the large stacks of hickory wood and the firing of the logs to make embers for the smokers. No one was cooking yet other than dinner for the night over camp stoves. But even without meat, just the aroma of hickory alone was intoxicating. I’m really looking forward to tasting the contest entries.

Too cold to linger long, we did not try the food vendors or the wine tables. But I thought I’d share the schedule for today (Saturday) if any ‘hounds are in the area and want to check it out.
