Last Saturday we celebrated our ChowPuppy's transition to ChowDog (or LLama) status as he reached his 21st birthday. We began our oddysey with a trip to Ali for Hibiscus tea and lamb shank. He was in very good form. From there a trip to Laboratorio de Gelato for intense and profound maple ice cream. The main event was omikase at Jewel Bako (thank you galleygirl) and the "kid's" first sake. After some wanderings - it was after 9:30 - we were ready to leave Manhattan and, as we crossed into Queens, we thought about The Arepa Lady.
I have been reading about The Arepa Lady for years and had not as yet attempted to find her. I must admit to some reluctance as I wondered if her arepas con queso could ever measure up to the build up. Anyway, we set off in pursuit and found her with little difficulty on her corner at 79th and Roosevelt. We ordered our arepas and she soon presented us with the grilled, buttered cakes. I steeled myself for the possible disappointment and let my son have the first bite. As the huge grin crossed his face and his eyes rolled up into his head, I realized that something very special had happened. I took a bite and WOW! Rich, ethereal, sweet, tangy, lush, and corny. Remarkable, wonderful - I may be there every weekend. By all means... GO!
