I had the pleasure of being taken to Applewood Cafe in the Slope (11th bet. 7&8th Aves.)last night for my birthday. Everything from the meal, ambience, and service were superb. It was one of the best meals I've ever experienced.
We stared with infused cocktails: an orange, vodka & earl grey infusion and a fresh thyme and blood orange martini - heavenly. Along came some french bread with three spreads - beet/chipolte, french butter, and fresh sheeps milk cheese.
Apps: lobster broth and fresh nantucket scallops with shaved fennel -- beyond heavenly.
Entrees: organic ny strip steak with yukon gold potato puree & roaster shallots. Unbelieveable! Sweet, tender, cooked to perfection. My friend had duck breast with the shallots and parsnip puree. We though we died and went to heaven.
For dessert (hey, it was my birthday - time to splurge) we had a fallen chocolate souffle with fresh marscapone & the most delicious coffee ice cream. My friend had the carrot cake with cream cheese ice cream (she is a cc freak) and they were both absoultely fantastic.
The appetizers and steak were specials, but the whole menu looked good. This is the first good restaurant we've had in the Slope in a very long time.
It's pricey but worth every penny. Can't wait to go back.
