It's apple time in SLO County!

In response to a post on the SF board about heirloom apples:

SLO Co has many farmstands, and several devoted to heirloom apples in the See Canyon area in the coastal hills just south of SLO. Arkansas Blacks are listed as being in season now at Gopher Glen Farm. There is a link to all Calif farmstands here on the Calif board; try also for See Canyon apple variety seasons, which extend through early Dec.

Drive time from SF about 3 1/2 hours down 101, which is a scenic drive any time of the year, with many great snacking opportunities in the small Salinas Valley towns.

To reach See Canyon, drive about 10 min. south of SLO on 101, exit San Luis Bay Drive, turn right, go about 1/2 mile to bottom of hill, slow, and turn right onto country lane 'See Canyon Rd'. Many farmstands specializing in heirloom apples (and quinces!).

Once in SLO Co. area, lots of dining opportunities: fine, ethnic, and causal. Everything from 4-diamnond inns to great beachside campgrounds for lodging. Many SLO Co. areas have been topics of recent Calif dining postings. Near See Canyon, the town of Avila Beach has a great Farmers-Fisherman's market on their beachside plaza on Fri evenings, there is also one in Morro Bay (on Saturday?),and every town in the county has a farm products Market at least once a week, year round.

A nice get-away-from-it-all place. Sometimes it's just great to 'get outta Dodge!'
