Appetizer quandry

My extended family is getting together next weekend to celebrate my parents' 50th anniversary at my aunt's vacation cottage in Wales. We're going to be roasting local lamb for the main course, but I'd like to do something showy for appetizers. The problems:

-- there is no electricity, so I need something I can make in a fairly large quantity without a food processor, mixer, etc. Also, I think the utensils will be fairly basic.

-- some of the family are vegetarians

-- I won't have access to exotic ingredients, spices, etc.

I was thinking of doing something with phyllo (which I can get in the city on the way), or with a pate a choux dough (some kinds of puffs with a savory filling). Right now I'm thinking of a selection of puffs with different fillings, some veggie, some not.

I'd appreciate any ideas along that line or other brilliant ideas for appetizers that will wow the crowd.
