Many years ago in the 60s, my grandmother helped my mom prepare these appetizers for an open house. I've always suspected that my grandmother learned this recipe while she was in Canada before she came to the U.S. She was born in England (late 1800s) and sailed (alone) to Canada at age 14. In Canada, her given name of Mary became Marie, which suggests some French influence after she arrived. She was somewhat of a mystery but these are the bits about her life that I've been able to piece together. That may have nothing at all to do with the recipe, but here's how it was made and I'm wondering if there's a name for it.
Sandwich bread slices, crusts removed
Radishes, thinly sliced
Cut each crust-less piece of bread into 4 triangles. Spread each piece generously with butter, top with thin slices of radish, and sprinkle with black pepper. Arrange on a platter or plate and serve.
It sounds strange but they were delicious. I was about 12 at the time and I can still taste them to this day!
