Antigua Update

Spent a long weekend in March in Antigua. Had the pleasure of dining at Dennis's on Ffrye's Beach. After a day on my friends boat, we headed to Castaways at Jolly Harbour for drinks/HH. The sunset was lovely and the bartender quite fun. It was a lively crowd on a busy beach. We cleaned up and headed to Dennis's. It is a casual, rustic spot on the hill overlooking this fabulous beach. I recall Eric Clapton had a casual jam session here once. I used to hang on Ffryes when I lived on island. It's a magical spot. The dining room again is rustic. On this Sat. night it was pretty busy with a few local tables and a tourist table. Our order was easy as I wanted Barbudian lobster (grilled). My friend had snapper. The wine was good, the music (canned) was nice. Soon a table of tourist women with one man came in and the sound level changed. In short our dining experience was ruined but we made the best of it. They were merely having fun and were pretty lit but often I could not hear my friend. The good came and it was divine. My lobster was good sized with lots of fresh local veggies and grilled potatoes. I had a taste of the snapper and loved it. The price after tip was 65.00 USD for a few drinks and two entrees. We headed to The Deck and then Dogwatch at Jolly Harbour for drinks after. These are two lively spots with a good vibe. Dogwatch is a pub with darts and all. The Deck is outdoors with a view of the boat basin. My final evening I dined at Melini's at JH as well. Lovely seasfood pasta but wayyy too much oil for my taste. Looks like a fun spot again on the boat basin.

Breakfast was twice at the snack shop at the marina for local saltfish and bread. Dry and not so great. Vigie's in town is much better.

Sunday was spent at Shirley Heights. I used to hang out here on Sundays years ago. It's the same vibe with great steel band, BBQ and lively people watching. As the night goes on, the band changes and the drinking continues. Not to miss for newbies in Antigua.

I loved my friend's villa at JH and it's a very cool hip setting with golf carts to rent, the fabulous Epicurean Grocery on site and many bars and a few dining spots.
