Anthony's Runway 84 dissapoints

edberliner | May 29, 201704:54 AM

I love listening to Anthony on the radio on Paul Castronovo's show. He can make shoe leather sound delicious. He and Paul talk constantly about Runway 84 so I figured we couldn't go wrong when our friends suggested that we meet them there for dinner. I studied the rather limited menu prior to going so I had an idea what I was getting before hand. Even though the menu didn't mention chicken marsala, they did have some chicken dishes and they did make veal marsala so I figured correctly that they would accommodate a request. The place is out of the way from where we live and in an unusual area for a restaurant but looked very nice from the outside. Valet parking is $2.00, very reasonable. We went inside and I was underwhelmed by the décor. I would best describe it as a weak attempt at some type of airport or airline theme. Since not much airport or airline food is worth eating one has to wonder if perhaps the theme should be updated? I would also describe the interior as not memorable. The prices are about 20 percent higher than comparable fare at other Italian joints, for example my chicken marsala was in about the $28 range, at Gianni's of Pompano it is $22 and much better. The entres come with a salad that was forgettable and muscles which were large and tender and pretty good, probably would have been much better if I actually liked muscles, but I ate them and sopped up the broth. The chicken marsala was good. Not great, not worth going back for, not worth $28. It was good. There is a dump in El Paso on the West side, the name escapes me, that makes the best chicken marsala I have had the pleasure of eating, I can come pretty close to that when I make it, these guys weren't even on my level. For $28 I could have fed the table chicken marsala, muscles, salads and wine and had change in my pocket, a fuller tummy and a smile on my face. Their chicken marsala was good. My wife had a fish that she enjoyed, and our dining partners had veal marsala and linguini in red clam sauce. The both took home more than half their meals so I don't know if that was due to enjoyment or perhaps the opposite, don't know. I tasted my wife's fish and it was good. I don't really like fish so I'm not the one who should judge, but she didn't rave about it on our way home, and she would have if it had been rave worthy. Our dining companions have lived around here since State Road 84 was the main highway from Weston to Fort Lauderdale, and they ast ate at Anthony's Runway 84 over 25 years ago. My guess is that we won't be going back for another 25 or so! (It was just good, it should have been just great, Gianni's of Pompano is much better)
