my annual texas vacation. this time i hit the "lower diamond" of autin to laredo to port isabel to port aransas & back to austin.
CHUYS -- happy hour off the plane. what a welcome, two people - two! bought me drinks. thx to a dallas guy in town w/ family for a ut tour and to a chuys regular.
JO's -- fine joe as ever.
WHEATSVILLE CO-OP -- good hippie veg sandwich, great juices, took out an iced yerba mate drink to beat the heat.
SAM's -- mutton, ribs, potato salad & beans. ribs were ok, mutton was butta. sides were perfect too. maybe slipped a notch, but it was that 100 degree heatwave and sam was wiped out.
GUEROS -- that bartender who's been there forever made me good herradura resposado margs. the chips and thre salsas good as always. i dont eat there.
LAS MANITAS -- migas con hongos w/ black beans on the side. awesome as ever. bland if you dont use the hot salsa tho. the lady that runs it at breakfast is a treasure.
TACO CABANA -- late-night salsa bar station of anyone's dreams. decent chain, its gone downhill a bit the last two years.
BLACK'S BBQ -- i wanted CM in luling but they just closed as i pulled up. the owner of BLACKS was a peach, he gave me some extra brisket and another hot link on the house. nice smoky flavor to that brisket, but i think i liked the sausage even better. beans for the side. crackers, pickles & onions too of course. quirky the tea & sweet tea are serve yourself out front, but the sodas are served for you behind a counter.
TACO PALENQUE -- only thing open on easter, but a fine choice. an ok beef fajita & a super tender & flavorful bowl of menudo. tasty iced jamaica to drink. please bring this chain to nyc (see below photo).
nuevo laredo, mex
the "new" CADILLAC CLUB -- being just before easter nothing much was open. quail & froglegs combo dish was good, the warmed over gringo sides of baked potato & julienned carrots were awful.
rio grande city
EL COMAL -- macahado breakfast burrito. chopped eggs put this version over the top for me. great coffee too. friendly, very, very nice 'lil place across from fort ringgold.
MARIAS (?) not sure of the name. excellent gordita.
AMBERJACKS -- ceviche app was delicious. the gulf shrimp curry app dish was just ok. the sweetened curry was off putting.
some tavern next to the uss lex. catch-of-the-day amberjack platter. fish was freshh and cooked perfectly. but too much seasoning. the sides were atrocious. red potatos were hard and had cold centers & green beans out of a can. shoulda got it as a sandwich. cheesy band, ice cold "dressed" lone stars and views make up for it.
TAQUERIA SAN JUAN -- macahado w/ side of lengua bbq. very tasty. not the world's best tongue 'cue but it sure hit the spot. lovely place. i got the nod for my order from the owner when i checked out which is always nice.
