I had a quick lunch at Annapoorna, a Pure South Indian Vegetarian Cuisine, 2299 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo, 650-345-4366, with my co-worker. I ordered my favorite dish, masala dosa, and it was very long, crispy, with nice spicy potatoes and spices inside. I think it's much better then Udupi in Newark. My co-worker had a special, two grilled pancake looking, homestyle dosa with punjabi vegetable curry with cauliflower and sauces. He thought it was more a North Indian style dish and didn't think it was so great. He had the mango lassi which he said was good.
We had quick service, food was ready in 5-10 minutes. I would recommend the place.
Went to the Thai Festival on Sun. 9/15. It's in a small shopping center, Town and Country Village shopping area Sunnyvale. They have maybe 7 different stands, most are restaurants from the area. I had pad thai (forget which stand) for $5. It was ok, nothing to write about, some desserts: one Roti, it's a sweet dessert like a crepe with sugar, this one was very greasy and not enough sugar or sweetness. Had the best roti at the Thai Temple in Berkeley, one a red jelly dish with jackfruit, and on ice cuz it was kinda warm. Not very good, but my vegetarian girlfriend liked it. She really like the coconut jelly dish I got from another stand. It was a clear jelly with coconut flavor on the top of it, you can pick it up with your fingers, pretty tasty, very similar to poi (Hawaiian dessert). Friend had a vegetarian curry from Mai Thai, they don't have a restaurant in the area, but they do lots of festival in the Bay area. She thought the dish was very good. Besides the food, were vendors--one had thai sauces, curry in a can, soup in a can. Some clothes, purses from Thailand, a demo for kickboxing.
