I went to try the new Cambodian restaurant in lowell yesterday for lunch - 602 Merrimack st, 978-275-0884. This was written up in the globe's food section on Wednesday. This is a more upscale cambodian than is normally seen but less so than Carambola. The best thing about this restaurant is that it has many pages of interesting dishes all with extensve descriptions. We asked for a take-out menu and were given an incomplete version of their main menu. I have created a pdf of this if anybody wants me to email it to them or even if they have an area to put this online . We had a soup- Somlaw Ma-ju-traw-Yoong Jeak- SK13
Fish, banana blossom, lemongrass, garlic, ma'om, kaffir limeleaves galangal and tamarind. Oh and several red chilli pepers floating in it. but that may have been for us as we asked for it hot. there was huge chunks of tilapia in this dish and it tasted great, even better after eating the chilli and allowing the taste buds to really sensitise.
We also had the cambodian dish very similar to Haw moak from the specials- trey something. fish with complex spices and coconut milk steamed in a banana leaf. Very nice combination of flavors. Our third dish was huge shrimp done angkor style
this comes with the shrimp basted with the spices and a side salad of ginger, radish and carrot slices. all were accompanied by a large dish of jasmine rice.
We did not get to taste half the things we wanted to but we are intrigued. if nothing else this is an ideal chance to get translations for dishes at the red rose and other restaurants.
