I sometimes enjoy walking downtown to check on the progress of the Bank District loft conversions and other reuses of historic buildings. The idea of converting existing, unused, buildings to residential and supporting commercial usage excites me and I hope so much that it succeeds, transforming downtown into a vital experience that deserves to be.
On one of these excursions I stopped for lunch at Angelique, where Main St., Spring St. and Eighth St. converge. It's an authentic french cafe with good food at reasonable prices. It's popular with many in the garment district. There's not much in the way of decor or style, but a satisfying meal can be had on a few tables indoors near the kitchen, out on the patio facing the gritty streets or up on a roof deck which is quite pleasant. Good bread, entrees with salad, good sandwiches. No liquor license.
I've eaten here a few times over the last few years and the food hardly varies; the owner/ chef seems very much hands-on.
