Went to Angelato this wekend, just off of the Santa Monica Promenade and was very impressed.

There were over 100 flavors to choose from, the selection reminded me of some of the gelato shops I visited in Italy years ago -- they're definitely into hazelnut! A fair number of flavors were combinations (chocolate hazelnut, etc) There were also about 25 flavors of sorbet included.

I had the chocolate cherry, caramel green apple and coconut gelato, wy wife had the chocolate pistachio, rum raisin gelatos, and grapefruit sorbet. All were really tasty and the portions were sizeable.

They only allow you three tastes, which I guess makes sense because it's possible to spend an hour there tasting every interesting flavor. They also make you pay before you order, so they may have had a few problems with some people grabbing and running, but in the end it was not a real inconvenience.

I'm not entirely sure how gelato differs from ice cream, but this was a very satisfying experience overall. There are a few other gelato shops around town, but I like this one better than the shop on Pico near Westwood... and I think it also compares favorably to the place on Robertson... although admittedly I've only gone to those places a couple of times.
