We made it to both Aneka Rasa and Cafe Cakes last Friday. We both love spicy Malaysian food so were looking forward to Aneka Rasa. We ordered one lunch special with beef rendang as the main course, roti canai, nasi lemak and sambal shrimp. The roti was decent though the curry sauce seemed very thin. The nasi lemak had a nice combination of flavors from the ikan bilis and achat (vegetable pickles), but everything was lacking in any heat. Same with the beef rendang - pleasant but dull. The shrimp was sickly sweet and drowned in a starchy sauce. It reminded me of bad sweet and sour glop that some Chinese restaurants offer. So, overall it was decent but not very Malaysian. My husband who has travelled in Malaysia extensively describes the local foods there as spicy, "clean" and fresh tasting, which this meal was not. We agree that Penang in Chinatown suits us much better.
Cafe Cakes was a delight. We shared the mocha torte there and I had the caramel milk tea. The milk tea was interesting but way too sweet for either of us. The torte was wonderful. We took two milk tea puddings home for later. I liked these, the flavor is unexpected and the texture light. My husband found these too sweet again. We'll definitely be back for more of Cafe Cakes' offerings.
