My Hungarian grandmother was a frequent customer of Rigo, the bakery in Yorkville, and I have many fond memories of their pastries. Since Rigo shut down shortly after she died (I choose to believe it was a coincidence), I figured a trip out to Andre's was in order.
Unfortunately when I got there last Friday afternoon, they were already out of cheese danish, but I did pick up a cherry strudel and some rugelach. Wow, these were good! The rugelach were probably the best I've ever had (and much better than the Not Just Rugelach version you can buy at the Tribeca farmers' market), and the cherries in the strudel were nice and tart, balancing off the nut filling. I was told in no uncertain terms by the lady behind the counter that I was not to reheat the strudel in the microwave--I hadn't even thought of it!
Next on my agenda to buy there: the poppy seed and nut pressburgers, and of course, the cheese danish.
I was stupid enough not to ask what their hours are--does anyone know when they're open on weekends? Given how late they're open on Fridays, I assume they're open Saturday, but I could be wrong. And if you've got any advice on the best time to get my hands on the cheese danish...
