Situated directly opposite the Win Yip Chinese supermarket, on Oldham Road, Vnam was I think the first Vietnamese place to open in Manchester. I heard about it, back in 2010, on the now moribund Egullet UK/Ireland board. I was last there in 2012 and, looking back at my notes, I see I’ve just eaten exactly the same lunch as I did then.

So, summer rolls to start. Light and, erm, summery – which contrasted with the rain pissing down outside. Wrapped in those slightly gloopy rice wrappers, that you can never get quite as neat at home, as they do in restaurants. And filled with thin rice noodles, bits of pork, prawns and a little coriander (more would have been nice, as would some mint). Nice peanut sauce for dipping.

BBQ pork was as good as I remember it. Flavoursome and properly barbecued, with little flecks of charring. That sits on more of the rice noodles and, off to one side, some shreds of carrot, lettuce & cucumber. Alongside, a bowl of dressing, based on fish sauce, with a little chopped herb.

And, having stocked up on “stuff”, at Wing Yip, I’ve no excuse not to be doing some East Asian cooking at home. Maybe yet another try at summer rolls.
