Ohmydeargod, it's been AGES 'Hounds - I've missed you! So after a stint in the Amazon and a horrific depression bout, I wanted spicy Indian eatz and heavenly naan. Me and the BFF hit up Anarkali on Melrose, and here are the results.
Place: Anarkali, Sunday, 5/21 - 5:00 PM
Myself + 1 guest (My darling bestest friend)
Ratings and descriptions:
Ambiance - B
Your stereotypical but still quite lov-a-ly swoopy fabric and red booths, all dressed-up in the ethnic melange. Nicey nice.
Service - B-
It took forever + a couple of hours to finally get our order in, and they messed up a few minor things. Once we ordered, however, we were well attended - TOO well attended, as they brought some courses twice and it got to the point of feeling bothered, there were so many checkers-in. Feast or famine.
Food (Taste) - C+
All dishes were solid-ish, but none had outstanding flavor or punch. The typical average Indian fare.
Food (Presentation) - C-
No extra effort here.
Wine/Drinks - C
They have a few ethnic beers and the like, but we opted for non-alchy selections. The indian tea was pretty weak, and that was a bummer.
Value - B-
A lot of food for a so-so price tag, and hot/cold service = relatively kosher value.
Overall Experience - C+
Argh - just another painfully mediocre Indian eatin' throwdown.
Chai tea + sodas
** Weak, unimpressive
** Very limited beer/wine menu as well
Served with spicy red sauce, green sauce, and
** Tasty critters - sauces bland
Had garlic and plain varieties, served with rayta
** One batch was undercooked, the other not
garlicky enough. Rayta was thicker than
I'm used to as well, and not all that
Indian veggie soup
Basic broth with carrots and onions and lentils
** Very bland
Potatoes and spinach
** No spice or kick whatsover - pretty blah
Various veggies in a very spicy curry broth
** Liked this a great deal; the best dish of
the eve by far.
Okra satueed with spices
** Not too shabby at all - great texture,
decent amount of heat and flavor.
** Your basic rice presentation - just OK.
** Could only handle 2 bites of this, and I'm
rather fond of this flavor combo, but this
version was icky. Tasteless. Pooey.
Total damage, including tax - $46
Final word - there's much, much better indian goodies in this city; skip Anarkali unless it's just downright convenient.
