Amphora Wine Merchants

I just deleted a good, long post I finished writing, so I'll be brief.

This place, in Hayes Valley, is a sister-store to Absinthe and Arlequin, and is just a couple doors down from Absinthe on Hayes.

It's very boutique-y, without the attitude or the prices. I've never been steered wrong with a food pairing or event suggestion. Sheryl, the manager, used to be a professional chef, and she makes some phenomenal recommendations (who'da thought a fine Pouilly-Fuisse for a Father's Day brunch?!?)

I've picked up a Favorito Viognier (still my favorite, Melanie - but Sam has his own venture now, Spencer-Roloson) for $10, several fine Riojas for $20 and less (and a stellar Primitivo for $10), and a few different Montepulcianos for $35 (which I'd seen elsewhere for $40+).

They often have tastings, and just recently moved into Absinthe for these (next one is coming up Monday - all about Spanish wines... I'm very tempted... any takers?). And, there is another event on Wednesday, where Sheryl will demo some Thxgiving recipes and wine pairings. Most are between $25 - $35.

The link below is almost embarrassingly outdated, but the store is most certainly NOT - and they have a pretty good newsletter you can subscribe to.
