American Chinese with atmosphere?

Question

I love authentic Szechuan as much as the next Chowhound, and I've staked out the places for it pretty well at this point, but where is there really good American Chinese in the Cities?

I've had a look through old threads and Evergreen and Rainbow seem to be the leaders, but there hasn't been much discussion in a while.

Anyone have a nominee? Ideally, there'd be a nice enough dining room that it would make a pleasant dinner out, as well.

Anywhere's fine, but we're in Roseville, so closer to the northeast corner of the metro is easier.

Its not 'chinese', yet do yourself a favor and hit up Lisu's in Roseville. Its right by you and its my favorite Thai in ALL of MN -- and I literally live on Eat Street i.e. Nicollet. Great prices, service, food, and nice enough interior.

I have been going to house of wongs for over 40 years. I have introduced many people to the place. Its American Chinese but amazing.

I haven't been there in close to 20 years, but I seem to remember Ping's as having nice atmosphere. I have no clue as to what the food is like these days. Perhaps someone else knows.

Surprised no one mentioned Szechuen in Roseville. We tried at Annoying Opinions' advice. It was delicious, and close by for us too. Highly recommended, with beer/wine available.

I guess I don't really understand what you're searching for here. Most of the more authentic Chinese restaurants in town serve so-called "American Chinese food." Even Grand Szechuan, arguably the most authentic Chinese restaurant in town, has a full half of its menu devoted to typical American-style Chinese food. In fact, you are likely to get better-made versions of this food at the authentic Chinese restaurants - better cuts of meat, lighter batter on the sweet and sour pork/lemon chicken, and so-on.

So this leaves me to think you are either looking for old-style Chinese food (crunchy chow-mein noodles, gloppy sauces, canned mushrooms and bamboo shoots, lots of celery, etc.,) or a place with a certain atmosphere (black lacquered furniture, red lanterns, cloisonné vases, etc.,) or both?

Are you just nostalgic for the old Nankin???

Wait! I've got a great idea for you. How about David Fong's in Bloomington? They've been around for 50 years, are housed in a cool mid-century building and have delectable offerings such as: Cream Cheese puffs, Shrimp Toast, Crab Rangoon, Egg Foo Young, Chicken Hawaiian, Chicken Subgum Chow Mein, and Honey Walnut Shrimp. I know it's a schlep from Roseville, but I have a feeling this is just what you're looking for.
