Amber Cafe: thoughts?

antchang | Nov 13, 2005 08:13 PM

Just found out that the owners of Amber India opened up a casual dining place down the road on El Camino near Castro in Mountain View (600 W. El Camino; 650-968-1751).

Went there last night with a few friends and had the samosas ($3.99 for 2), aloo tikki ($3.99), chole bhature ($6.49) and lamb indian pizza ($7.49).

I have heard a lot of good things about Amber India (regular sit down restaurant) but have only been there once because of the high prices (this was years ago and I thought the prices were ridiculous even though the food was good).

I was fairly unimpressed with the food at Amber Cafe. The samosas were the only thing that I felt stood out - and it seems like not a good value at $4 for 2 (I'm comparing to something like Vik's in Berkeley).

Two questions:
1. Any thoughts on how the food at Amber Cafe compares to the food at Amber India? (I'm wondering if the food is vastly superior at the full-service restaurant and I should give the lunch buffet a chance)

2. Any suggestions for good, cheap chaat around Mtn View? (like Vik's)

Thanks.
