Turkish restaurant at 1071 First Ave., between 58 & 59. I was headed up to a Thai restaurant (Luscious Thai, one of the more acceptable in walking distance of my office) when I noticed that this little Turkish place had a 4-course lunch for $11.95. The takeout menu doesn't have the lunch special listed but from memory the courses are:
SOUP or SALAD
and maybe another one or two
Pan-fried Tilapia Filet
I had the soup, which was a cup of very good lentil, the eggplant salad, which compared favorably with that at other Turkish restaurants, the zucchini pancakes (a little greasy, served with yoghurt), and the fish, which came with a little green salad on the plate.
The servings of the appetizers were surprisingly large--I think full-size portions, and the hunk of fish was also quite big.
They served warm (but maybe not fresh-baked) Turkish bread, a lot better than those ridiculous little rolls at Ali Baba Terrace. The people were very nice.
I've found that by heading northeast of my office and getting out of the business district I can get some decent eats at good prices at lunch.
