Was at Monterey Market on Saturday. Don't usually shop there because of the evenworsethanberkeleybowl parking. Lucked out with an easy spot in their lot and joined the throngs clogging the aisles inside. It was a bit too late for the Berk Farmers' Mkt.
I was having people for dinner and making a Paula Wolfert recipe of Musakhan - chicken marinated in sumac, cinammon, nutmeg and lemon juice and cooked with lavosh and onions.
I wanted a load of fruit for a shortcake dessert (topped with whipped yoghurt and cream cheese and a bit of sugar and vanilla)...anyway, to make a long story even longer, I checked out the large selection of peaches, nectarines and berries and asked, I think, one of the owners if the stone fruit was any good yet. He said "It's ALL EXCELLENT!" I wasn't sure about this response, but trusted it much more than I would one from the produce manager at, say, Albertsons. In any case, I decided to believe him and got lots of peaches and nectarines - organic and not, and name brands (can't remember if they were Frog Hollow or not). Also bought a bunch of berries of various kinds, including Swanton strawbs.
Well, he was right. They were ALL EXCELLENT - juicy and sweet. Huzzah and hip, hip hooray! I'm going back for more.
