Last week I had dinner with a friend at Platanos, a nuevo latino place on Guerrero. I had a salad with crabmeat, avocado and grapefruit, then an appetizer of duck confit tacos topped with some sliced radishes. Everything was fine ... and then, we had DESSERT.
I usually want only a couple bites of dessert -- but with this thing, I wanted to whisk the plate out from in front of my companion and devour it in its entirety, then lick the plate clean.
I don't remember what they called it, maybe "Aztec Chocolate Cake" (they describe it on the menu so should be easy to find), and I am not sure if it was a special or always on the menu. But if you see it, order it! It was a warm chocolate cake, about the size of a big cupcake, flavored with CHILES and cinnamon, served in a pool of espresso creme anglaise, topped with a small dollop of fresh whipped cream, no frosting. It is AMAZING -- not too sweet, but what a symphony of flavors! Cinnamon, dark chocolate, espresso, a note of richness from the cream and the creme anglaise -- and then on the finish, a surprising note of heat from the chiles. all the flavors were rounded and blended and the thing just WORKS.
I will go back to Platanos just for this dessert. And I won't be sharing it next time. :-)
